Kayaking Destinations: The Comox Valley |
|
The Comox Valley is a great area for shorter trips. There are several good day trip destinations and Tree Island (aka Sandy) is can be an overnight destination. Trips in this area can be on the ocean, in the river estuary, or on Comox Lake. For the most part all of these areas are suitable for beginners. Both the ocean and Comox Lake can get quite rough. The biggest concern for the river estuary is the tide. At very low tides there is no where much to paddle. Launch sites: River Estuary - Courtenay Airpark. Turn down 20th Street off Cliffe Ave.
- Millieum park. Turn into the parking by the 5th street bridge.
- Comox Marina. Turn off Comox Ave towards the water.
Ocean- Union Bay Boat launch. In Union Bay just off the old island highway.
- End of Argyle Road. Turn off the old island highway onto Argyle just South of Royston.
- Pt. Holmes
- Kye Bay
- Goose Spit
Comox Lake - Cumerland side boat launch.
- Just past the Courtenay Fish and Game Club across the bridge.
Drop into Comox Valley Kayaks for more info on this area. There is a good book on local paddling available - Day trips in the Comox Valley and Campbell River Areas - by Willie Rundquist.
